WATERVILLE, Maine - The Tufts University volleyball team wrapped up its regular-season with a three-set NESCAC victory at Colby College on Saturday. Set scores were 25-16, 25-21 and 25-22.
Head coach Cora Thompson's team won its eighth straight match to improve to 17-4 overall. The 8-2 in NESCAC Jumbos earned the third seed for next weekend's conference championship tournament. Colby (10-12, 2-8 NESCAC) finished ninth in NESCAC and had its season come to a close.
Fifteen Jumbos saw action today with eight recording kills. Jennelle Yarwood led Tufts with 11, while Cate Desler (eight) and Rileigh Farragher (seven) added to the total. Maddie Yu (pictured) registered four service aces in a row to start the second set and also had 22 assists for the match. Twenty digs by Stephanie Lee and four blocks by Grace Legris led the winners defensively.
Jenny Slaveck and Natalie Simonton had seven kills apiece to lead Colby, with Slaveck also serving three aces. Samantha Schultz finished with 11 digs and Natalie Bumpus went up for two solo blocks and two block assists.
Tufts opened the match with leads of 5-1 and 10-3 in the first set. The host Mules were able to narrow the margin to five, including 17-12. The Jumbos got the win by scoring eight of the next 12 points, with two kills by Maya Lightfoot and four Colby errors leading the way.
Yu's four straight service aces were part of a 6-0 start for the Jumbos in the middle set. Tufts was ahead 10-1, but to Colby's credit they fought back to 19-17 on a service ace by Bella Schumacher. However, five of Tufts' final six points came on kills including two by Desler.
The Mules led for the first time in the third set, including 16-14 on a Jumbo service error. The match was tied 20-20, but another pair of kills by Lightfoot and single points from Legris and Yarwood helped the Jumbos close out the win.
Tufts faces sixth-seed Williams College in the opening round of NESCAC's.
