MEDFORD – The Tufts University volleyball team improved to 11-4 overall and 4-2 NESCAC with a three-set win against Trinity College (7-10, 0-6) on Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-15, 25-22, 25-17.
Five Jumbos finished with five or more kills – Cate Desler (8), Grace Legris (7), Christine Audette (5), Rileigh Farragher (5) and Cora Cunningham (5). Both Legris (pictured) and Stephanie Lee served two aces. Lee's 19 digs led defensively, while a solo block and two assists were a good contribution from Maya Lightfoot.
For Trinity, Sydney Cross-Watts and Eva Lekovic both had a team-high six kills. Natalia Ortiz finished with 17 digs and Julia Torre had 12. Molly Bernstein was strong at the net defensively with a solo block and three assists.
Up 11-10 in the first set, the Jumbos went on an 8-2 run capped by a Desler kill to lead 19-12. Legris' three kills, two by Desler and a service ace by Ariel Zedric helped give Tufts the cushion which they expanded on for the final 10-point margin.
Trinity opened a 9-3 lead in the middle set aided by six Tufts errors. The Jumbos worked their way back into it including a block by Farragher and Legris that tied the match at 13-13. The set remained tight from there and was at 23-22 Jumbos before a pair of Trinity errors gave the hosts the win.
For the third set, a 9-1 Jumbo run turned a 6-6 tie into a 15-7 lead. Two kills by Lightfoot and five Bantam errors keyed the spurt. The Jumbos led comfortably the rest of the way.
Tufts went on to face Trinity College (Texas) in another match at Cousens Gym on Saturday afternoon.
