SOMERVILLE, Mass. - Playing their first match on the Tufts campus since April 2019, the Tufts University women's tennis team rolled past NESCAC opponent Colby College 8-1 on Sunday at Lower Campus Courts.
The win improved the 11th-ranked Jumbos to 2-0 overall and it was their first conference win of the year. The Mules fell to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Tufts made quick work of Colby in doubles. The #1 pair of Maggie Dorr and Caroline Garrido and the #2 duo of Tilly Rigby and Casey Cummings finished simultaneously with 8-2 victories. The third Tufts tandem of Maddie Suk and Anna Lowy defeated Colby's Caleigh McClain and Riya Ravi 8-5 for the doubles sweep.
After Dorr scored a #2 singles win over Lindsey Hernandez 6-0 and 6-3, Suk delivered the Tufts team victory with their fifth win of the day in fourth singles 6-2, 6-2.
Colby avoided the shutout with a third singles win by Sam Riordan (6-2, 7-6 (3)). However, the Jumbos won the next three to make it five out of six in singles. Nicki Frankel lost just one game in her #6 match, and senior co-captain Patricia Obeid was a strong 6-3, 6-1 winner in fifth singles. Rigby took a first-set tie-break to help her sweep the #1 singles match over Carly Levitz 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Tufts, who has won 17 of their 18 singles and doubles matches so far in 2021, will host Connecticut College next Saturday at 1 pm. The Mules are next scheduled to host Trinity College on April 25.
