Early Offense, Effective Defense Gives Men's Lacrosse 24-16 Result at Conn

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Tufts University men's lacrosse team scored 17 goals in the first half, featuring a seven-point half from junior Mac Bredahl, as the Jumbos won 24-16 at Connecticut College in NESCAC action on Saturday.

Three of Cam Kelleher's four goals came in the first half.

Tufts' key quarter was the first as they bolted to a 7-2 lead on just nine shots. The Jumbos (2-0, 2-0 NESCAC) had three long-stick goals in the first frame by Taggart Eymer, Finn McTernan and Jack Walton. Seven different players scored the goals overall and senior goalie Joe Theuer stopped six of the eight shots he faced in the opening 15 minutes. Jared Rainville assisted the two goals for the hosts in the first.

The teams then combined for a remarkable 17 goals in the second quarter, with 10 by Tufts. Bredahl scored four times and had two assists in the period. After Camel goals by Toby Almeida and Rainville to start the second pulled the hosts within 7-4, a six-goal splurge by the Jumbos gave them a 13-4 advantage. Cam Kelleher scored twice during the run. The teams totaled eight goals together in the final four minutes of the second period and the Jumbos led 17-8 at intermission.

In addition to Bredahl's four goals and three assists in the half, Bryce Adam tallied two goals with two assists and Kelleher scored three times for the Jumbos. Rainville's two goals and two assists paced the Camels through the first 30 minutes. 

The hosts would score four of the first six goals in the second half, but had too far to come back from. Nick Farnum scored twice with an assist during this stretch that brought the Camels within 19-12 at 9:53 of the third. Jumbo senior Max Waldbaum had a goal and an assist as Tufts closed the third frame with three out of four to lead 22-13 heading into the fourth. The pace slowed down in the final quarter with just five total goals for the 24-16 final.

Bredahl finished with five goals and three assists, Waldbaum had three and four and Adam earned three goals with two assists in the final totals for Tufts. Kelleher scored four times and Jack Boyden added three. Adam and Kyle Adelmann both caused three turnovers and McTernan won five ground balls. Tufts goalies made 22 saves on 38 shots (.579), with back-up Cody Wiebe stopping 11 of 18 Camel attempts on net in 24 minutes of play.

Rainville was productive as well with four goals and three assists for Conn. Farnum finished with four goals and two assists. Almeida was excellent on face-offs, winning 26 of 39. Patrick Linehan earned five ground balls and Jack Venturelli picked up four with two caused turnovers. Bill Dreyer took the loss in goal, making five saves in one half of play.

Shots finished 53-48 in favor of Connecticut College.

Tufts went home after the game, but returns to Connecticut tomorrow to play Wesleyan at 3 pm.
