BALTIMORE - The Tufts University women's tennis team needed 94 minutes to get through its NCAA second round victory over Endicott College today in a match played at Johns Hopkins University. The Jumbos won 5-0 in the match which was played to decision.
Tufts (7-1) will now face host Johns Hopkins in the NCAA Regional final on Sunday at noon. The Blue Jays won 5-0 over Cairn University in Saturday's other second-round match at the site.
The Jumbos rolled through doubles today, starting with an 8-1 victory from the #3 pair of Maddie Suk and Patricia Obeid. They were followed off the court by the top Tufts pair of Maggie Dorr and Caroline Garrido who defeated Gulls Frenanda Trevino and Gretta Hartman 8-3. Dorr and Garrido are now 7-0 on the season. Tufts completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 victory from Tilly Rigby and Casey Cummings on the second court.
Tufts did not lose a game in either of the two singles matches that finished to clinch the team victory. Playing in the #3 spot, Suk won 6-0, 6-0 to up the Jumbo lead to 4-0. The decisive victory came from freshman Zoe Kava in sixth singles also by a 6-0, 6-0 score. She remained undefeated in singles at 5-0.
The four other matches at #1, #2, #4 and #5 were not finished.
Tufts and Hopkins played in the 2017 NCAA Regional final with the Blue Jays outlasting the Jumbos 5-4 to move on to the national quarterfinals. In Tufts' lone trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals back in 2011, they defeated JHU 5-1 in the Regional final.
