ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Tufts University women's sailing team is in eighth place after day 1 at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Championships on the Severn River.
Ten races were held in two divisions as the 18-team championship began on Wednesday. Tufts compiled finishes totaling 76 in A's and 94 in B's for a 170 score. They are eight behind seventh-place Hobart and William Smith Colleges (162) and three in front of ninth-place St. Mary's College of Maryland (173). The Jumbos are third among New England teams.
Tufts was fifth in A division today with their 76 score. In the 10 races, they had two fifths and three sixths. Junior Abbie Carlson skippered for the Jumbos with junior crew Jessica Friedman.
The Jumbos are 11th in B's after one day. They were the runner-up team in the eighth race. Sophomore Chloe Holder skippered with sophomore Cali Salinas.
Boston College leads the national championship regatta with a 35-66-101 score.
Four races were sailing in the morning in a building southerly seabreeze that peaked at 12 knots before lunch break. In the afternoon, the sailors and coaches made their way back to the same course location and cranked out another six races as the breeze slowly faded in the evening.
Racing resumes at 10 am Thursday morning.
