ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Tufts University women's sailing team finished racing at the 2021 Intercollegiate Sailing Association Championships on Thursday earning ninth place out of 18 teams.
The ninth-place finish at Nationals is the best for the Jumbo women' sailing team since the 2009-10 squad placed fourth.
Due to an unreliable wind on Thursday, just six races were contested in the two divisions for a total of 16 starts during the two-day championship regatta. Tufts had finishes adding up to 125 in A's and 160 in B's for a 285 total. They were just two behind eighth-place St. Mary's College of Maryland (283).
Tufts' A team of juniors Abbie Carlson at skipper and Jessica Friedman as crew placed sixth out of 18 in their division. On Thursday, they won the second race of the day and finished with a fourth and a fifth in the last two races.
The Jumbos were 12th overall in B's with sophomore skipper Chloe Holder sailng with classmate Cali Salinas as her crew. Their best Thursday performance was an third in the first race of the day.
College of Charleston came from behind on Thursday to win the national championship. They earned scores of 108 in A's and 93 in B's for a 201 final.
Day two started off postponed ashore due to a lack of wind. After an hour the breeze looked promising so the sailors launched and headed out to the race course off of Horn Point, but the wind died. Finally around 1:00 pm, a three to five knot east north east wind settled in enough to run races. Six races per division were sailed, all under six knots, before the race clock ran out.
