Box Score

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Tufts University women's lacrosse team set a new program record for goals in an NCAA Tournament game with their 23-7 victory over Cabrini University today in a second-round game played at Colby College.

Senior Catherine Lawliss led the Jumbos with five goals and three assists, senior Emily Games finished with three goals and four assists, senior Kirsten Grazewski added two goals and four assists and senior Kathryn Delaney tallied five goals. The 23 total surpassed the previous team NCAA record from a 22-16 victory over Drew University in 2009.

Head coach Courtney Shute's team (7-0) advances to the third round next Saturday (May 15) against Roger Williams at Colby with an 8 pm start. The Hawks defeated Westfield State 18-13 in their first-round game on Sunday.

Cabrini, whose season ends with an 8-3 record, was led by four goals from Dana Carlson today.

Carlson's second of the game for the Cavaliers had them within 4-3 at the 12:58 mark of the first half. However, the Jumbos would score twice within the next 40 seconds to regain the momentum. Beyond that, Tufts would score 17 of the next 19 goals overall in what would become a running time victory.

Back-to-back goals by Cabrini's Olivia Little and Carlson had closed the gap to 4-3, but Tufts' Colette Smith scored at 12:39 and Delaney added a free-position goal 19 seconds later for a 6-3 Jumbo lead.

The teams then went eight minutes without scoring before Games from Lawliss, and then Lawliss from Games made it 8-3 Tufts. Delany scored 11 seconds later and then again with 38 seconds to go until halftime for a 10-3 Jumbo advantage at intermission.

The Jumbos won 10 of the 14 draws in the first half, in which they had a 22-15 shots advantage.

Carlson continued her fine game and brought Cabrini back to life with the first two goals of the second half. The first at 27:27 was the Cavaliers' first tally in over 15 minutes of game time. The second pulled Cabirini within 10-5 at the 26-minute mark.

However, Tufts would again reply with force, scoring four times within a 2:44 span to go up 14-5. Lawliss had a goal and an assist during this spurt. That would start an 11-goal run overall that included two scores and three assists from Games. When Anna Clarke scored at 16:52 the Tufts lead was 15-5 and the clock went to running time. When the run was over the Jumbos led 21-5 with 6:36 remaining in regulation.

Olivia Pace assisted by Little stopped the run for Cabrini with 5:50 on the second-half clock, then Little tallied again for the Cavaliers at 3:35. Delaney and Grazewski had the last two Tufts goals.
