On a beautiful 70-degree day in Medford, Massachusetts at Bello Field, Tufts Men's Soccer took on a tough opponent in Williams College and earned a 1-0 victory on Saturday. Senior Ian Daly (pictured) recorded the goal.
Only eight shots on goal were taken in a mostly uneventful and physical defensive battle. The two NESCAC rivals felt each other out for the first period while only creating a few chances. Tufts' defensive line, headlined today by freshman defender Max Clivio, held Williams to four shots with one on goal in the first period. The first close opportunity in the game came near the 30-minute mark when Jumbo defender Gibson Campbell made a solid connection to a crossed ball that was barely blocked by nearby Williams defenders. Six minutes later, Campbell sent a header over the crossbar that kept the score 0-0 heading into halftime.
The game opened in the second half after a couple adjustments by the Tufts coaching staff to beat the ball pressure from Williams. Tufts fired four shots in the first five minutes of the second period before they finally secured a goal in the 50th minute. Forward Mati Cano drove down the left-hand side of the field and crossed the ball into the chest of defender Ian Daly, who corralled the ball to his left foot and blasted it into the goal all in one quick motion.
Tufts continued to attack, preventing Williams from recovering defensively. The next best chance came from midfielder Aidan Welsh who came flying in for a header in the 55th minute that could have put the Jumbos up 2-0. Meanwhile, Williams produced little offense with their closest chance coming from a header shot by forward Will Felitto, which was saved by Tufts goalie Erik Lauta. Tufts also disputed no foul and handball calls in the goal area that they believed should have given them penalties, but the outcome of the game still ended with a Tufts victory.
The Jumbos finished the match with a solid offensive performance that yielded 11 corner kicks and 19 shots, while Williams finished with two corners and five shots. Lauta earned his second shutout in as many starts with two saves. Michael Davis stopped five shots at the other end.
Tufts' next match is also at home on Tuesday, September 14, when they will play Wesleyan University. The Ephs are at Skidmore on Tuesday.
