Box Score
MEDFORD – The Tufts University men's soccer team defeated the Salem State University Vikings in dominant fashion by a score of 5-1 on Tuesday to maintain their undefeated record on the season, improving to 5-0-0.
The goals were plentiful in the first half for the Jumbos as Mati Cano continued his hot streak and scored two goals while teammates Calvin Aroh and Ian Daly (pictured) added first-half goals as well. Daly would also have an assist on the day.
Tufts got going early as just a minute and a half into the game Derek Enge sent a pass to Cano on a breakaway and he chipped it by the goalie to give the Jumbos an immediate 1-0 lead. It was not long after that when Cano would strike again as he collected a rebound off the hands of Salem State goalie Matt Hauntsman and finished it for his second goal of the game within 10 minutes of each other. The goal marks Cano's fifth goal in his last three games.
Just ten minutes later, Cano almost finished another one, but his header was denied by the post, leaving him just inches away from a hat trick. The first chance for Salem State came in the 23rd minute on a free kick from just outside the box, but the defensive wall from Tufts blocked the shot and the ball was cleared. In the 26th minute, Salem State capitalized on an opportunity as freshman Cam Downer found Kendy Prince who got behind the Tufts defense and rifled a shot into the goal for his ninth of the season, cutting down the Jumbos' lead to just one with 19 minutes remaining in the first half.
After what seemed to be another Tufts goal off a corner kick got called back by a hand ball foul, the brown and blue managed to find the back of the net once again as Daly sent a throw-in all the way from the sideline into the box, which somehow found its way through the defenders and to the feet of senior Calvin Aroh who finished it for a goal. Aroh and Daly would then be involved in yet another goal seven minutes later as Aroh's ball deflected off a defenders leg and landed perfectly in front of Daly, who put it past the goalie for his fourth goal of the season and the fourth goal of the half for the Jumbos just a minute and a half before halftime to make the score 4-1 in favor of the vistors.
The second half started similarly to the first, as the Jumbos got off to a lightning fast start. Just over two minutes into the second half, senior Aidan Welsh flew by multiple defenders with the ball and rifled a shot into the net shortly after entering the box to make the score 5-1.
For the remainder of the match, Tufts did not shoot nearly as much as they had been and seemed to be focused on keeping possession as much as possible to try to limit the Vikings' chances. Salem State did have one more great chance to score in the 76th minute as Samuel Deossa had an open shot near the goal, but sailed it high off the crossbar. Neither team would score again, ending the game with the score of 5-1.
Shots finished 28-9 for Tufts, with 22 coming in the first half. They also owned a healthy 11-1 advantage in corners (7-0 in first half). Erik Lauta made one save and earned the win for Tufts, while Jacob Totz stopped two shots in 19 minutes of play. Hauntsman was busy for the Vikings with 11 saves, while Leith Khan came on in relief and made four more.
The Tufts victory keeps them undefeated heading into a NESCAC matchup at Colby College on Saturday, while Salem State falls to 4-4-0 on the year. The Vikings are also heading into a conference matchup as they will travel to Mass Maritime on Friday.
