BRUNSWICK, Maine – Not long after a finishing off a nice four-set conference win at Bowdoin College on Saturday, the Jumbo volleyball team returned to the Polar Bear court and completed a 2-0 day with a three-set win over Maine Maritime Academy.
Set scores were 25-19, 25-13 and 25-17 as Tufts improved to 8-2 overall. The Mariners fell to 5-5.
Christine Audette led Tufts with 11 kills and just three errors on 17 swings for a strong .471 hitting percentage. Rileigh Farragher was outstanding hitting as well with eight kills and no errors in 11 attempts (.727). The Jumbos served 11 aces, with four different players accumulating two each. Three blocks from Grace Legris was the top defensive number for Tufts.
Rachel Melampy had 13 kills and four errors in 24 attempts for Maine Maritime, hitting .375. Seven digs by Sydney Rich and Katie Albritton also aided MMA's effort.
The opening set was tied 19-19 before the Jumbos scored the final six points on kills by Farragher and Jennelle Yarwood, a Cate Desler service ace and three Mariner errors. Tufts again finished strong in the second set by scoring the final eight points to run away with it. Three kills by Audette and two aces served by Maddie Yu led the way. In the third set Tufts stormed to a 17-6 lead on a kill by Brittany Bennet (pictured). Maine Maritime played valiantly until the finish, but another kill by Bennet won the set and the match for Tufts.
The Jumbos host Endicott College on Wednesday night at 7 pm. Maine Maritime plays a pair of conference matches at Lyndon next Saturday.
