MEDFORD, MA (October 12, 2022) -- Sophomore
Mia D'Angelo scored a pair of goals including the eventual game-winner Wednesday as the Tufts University field hockey knocked off the University of New England 3-1 in action from Ounjian Field in non-conference play.
The Jumbos (9-3) dominated the action in the opening half, as they posted a 17-0 shot edge over the first two quarters while earning all five of the game's penalty corners. Tufts got on the board towards the end of the first quarter, as D'Angelo made a strong move down the middle of the field, firing a shot from 10 yards out from goal past the stick of UNE keeper Lindsay Pych for the tally. The goal was fourth of the season at that point.
Early in the second quarter, it looked like the Jumbos were going to double their lead with four shots in less than 20 seconds but Pych made four stops in a row to keep her team within striking distance. Towards the end of the half, D'Angelo had another attempt on goal that was destined for the far right corner but her shot was stopped off the line by the Nor'easters Lauren Green.
After the half, Tufts continued to pin its visitors in its own zone but couldn't get one past Pych despite six more shots and five more penalty corner opportunities. In the fourth quarter UNE would get its first penalty corner of the game in the 50th minute, and tallied on its first shot of the contest as Kate Lindmark shoveled a shot into the cage on a loose ball to make it 1-1.
The tie game wouldn't last for long though, as D'Angelo put the Jumbos back on top on a top of a driven ball into the circle from junior Andrew DelGiudice at 52:26. Minutes later Tufts would add an insurance goal thanks to a great individual effort form
Kylie Rosenquest, who drive past a defender on the end line and fired a perfect cross into goal mouth. Junior
Rachel Scrivanich was waiting for the feed, and she sweep a hard shot into the left corner to put Tufts up 3-1 with a little over five minutes to play.
The hosts had a few more chances to add to their lead, but the three goals proved to be enough in the victory. D'Angelo came off the bench to lead the squad with five shots, four going on goal, while
Lainie Pearson and Rosenquest each fired four attempts including three on cage. The Jumbos finished with a 27-2 lead in shot attempts, including a 16-1 edge in shots on goal, while earning 12 of the game's 14 penalty corners.
UNE (7-7) was led by Pych, who made 12 saves in the contest, while Lindmark and Shelly Tremblay took the team's two shots.
The Jumbos jump back into New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action on Saturday, October 15, as they head to Lewiston, ME to battle Bates College at noon.
