LEWISTON, ME (October 15, 2022) – Goals by
Kylie Rosenquest and
Ashley Zolin in the third quarter gave Tufts Field Hockey a 2-1 victory on the road at Bates College on Saturday.
After Bates had gotten on the board in the first half, the Jumbos responded less than five minutes into the third quarter after a Tufts corner.
Mia D'Angelo passed it to
Reegan McCluskey at the top of the circle and her shot was tipped to Rosenquest who was able to score and tie the game at one.
Then with 15 seconds left in the third quarter, Tufts was awarded another corner. The Jumbos took advantage of it as McCluskey took the pass and sent it to
Schuyler Edie in the middle. Her shot was saved, but the rebound fell to Zolin on the back post and her second goal of the season came with less than a second left in the quarter.
The first quarter was back and forth as both teams had opportunities to put themselves ahead. For the Jumbos it was off a corner again as McCluskey had her shot blocked. The Bobcats' best look was just 45 seconds into the game as they ran down the field and Ella Blum had a good shot attempt that was saved by Jumbo goalie
Sam Gibby.
Five minutes into the second quarter, the home team got on the board first when Kami Lambert tipped in a Paige Cote shot to score her eighth of the season. The teams would go to halftime with the score being 1-0 Bates.
After the two Jumbo goals in the third quarter, Bates started to apply the pressure in the fourth. They had eight shots and six corners, but Gibby and the Jumbos' defense held strong. Less than a minute into the fourth quarter, the Bobcats had two opportunities off corners. Cote had both as she got the ball at the top of the circle and had a clean look, but Gibby saved it. Seconds later, Cote's shot was blocked by a Jumbo defender and was free for a couple of seconds before a Jumbo defender cleared it. The Jumbos had a chance late to add to their advantage, but McCluskey's shot was saved by Bates goalie Grace Biddle.
Rosenquest led Tufts (10-3) with four shots, three going on goal, while McCluskey had two attempts to go along with her assist. Gibby made six saves in the game.
Bates (7-6) was led by Cote, who had seven shots in the game with five going on goal, while five other Bobcats had shots. Biddle made five saves in the game. The Bobcats ended the game with a 12-9 advantage in shots along with an 8-4 lead in corners.
The Jumbos will continue New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action on Saturday, October 22, as they are back home to battle Middlebury College at noon.
