ROME, Ga. - Sophomores
Derin Acaroglu and
Vuk Vuksanovic of the Tufts University men's tennis team won their opening match at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Cup doubles competition on Thursday night.
The Jumbo pair defeated Evan Brady and Evan Erb of Washington & Lee University in a round of 16 match on Thursday 6-4, 6-4. That advances Acaroglu and Vuksanovic to the quarterfinals on Friday where they will face Ashton Ellis and Oscar Roy from Southwestern University.
The ITA Cup serves as the fall national championships for Division III, as well as Division II, NAIA and JUCO.
The Ellis and Roy duo from Southwestern whom the Jumbos will face next defeated Emory University's Nolan Shah and John Lasanajak, the #4 seed in the bracket, by 2-6, 6-2, 10-4 scores in the first round on Thursday.
Acaroglu and Vuksanovic were the ITA New England Region champions in doubles to earn their ITA Cup berth. Ellis and Roy won the ITA Southwest Regional title.
Friday's quarterfinal match for the Jumbos will start at 2:00 PM. If the win, they would play again on Friday no earlier than 4:00 PM.
