ROME, Ga. - The Tufts University Men's Tennis doubles team of sophomores
Derin Acaroglu and
Vuk Vuksanovic will play for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Cup title on Saturday after winning twice on Friday.
Acaroglu and Vuksanovic started Friday by winning their quarterfinal match versus Ashton Ellis and Oscar Roy from Southwestern University 6-3, 6-3.
That put them into the semifinals shortly thereafter against the Williams College tandem of Shawn Berdia and Jason Shuler. These were familiar foes, as Acaroglu and Vuksanovic had defeated (6-3, 7-6) them to win the ITA Regional doubles title earlier this season. The Jumbo pair won again today. After Tufts took the first set 6-3, the Williams team battled back to even the match with their own 6-3 win in the second set. In the decisive third set tie-breaker, the Jumbos won handily by a 10-4 score.
In the doubles championship match on Saturday, Acaroglu and Vuksanovic will face the third-seded team of Visha Aduru and James Hopper from Case Western University. They won their semifinal contest versus James Yu and Thomas Yu from Johns Hopkins University 7-6 (2), 6-2 on Friday.
The DIII doubles championship match will start at 1 pm Saturday.
The ITA Cup serves as the fall national championships for Division III, as well as Division II, NAIA and JUCO.
