Endicott Earns 2-1 Overtime Win Against Field Hockey

BEVERLY - First-year Maddy Dengler scored with just under one minute left in overtime giving host Endicott College a 2-1 victory over fourth-ranked Tufts University in non-conference field hockey action Thursday night at North Field.

The loss drops the Jumbos to 8-3 overall. It's their third setback in the last four games after starting the year at 7-0. Endicott improved to 9-2 with their eighth straight victory.

On the winning goal during seven-on-seven overtime, Endicott senior Meaghan Hogan made a run down the right side of the field and passed to a wide-open Dengler dashing down the middle. Tufts senior keeper Sam Gibby came out to near the top of the circle to meet her, but Dengler was able to control the ball after it bounced off Gibby's foot and sent a shot into the cage to win it.

Trailing 1-0 near the end of the third quarter, the Jumbos had tied the game at 1-1 on a penalty stroke. It was earned during a corner and senior Reegan McCluskey capitalized with her sixth goal of the season with just 45 seconds on the clock.

Until the penalty stroke, the Jumbos had been stymied by the Gulls and their first-year goalie Brianna Anslow in the third period. Tufts had advantages of 12-0 in shots and 4-0 in corners during the third, but Anslow made seven saves keeping Endicott ahead until the stroke.

Then again in the fourth, Tufts pressured the Gulls with a 10-1 shots advantage and 3-0 on corners, but Anslow made three more saves helping send the game to overtime.

In the overtime, Endicott put four shots on goal with Gibby making three saves for Tufts including one on a penalty shot prior to Dengler's game-winner.

The Gulls had taken a 1-0 lead 6:16 into the second quarter. During a flurry of activity in front of the Tufts goal, the Jumbos couldn't clear and senior Claire Boncek fired home a shot from the right side. That was part of an 8-1 shots and 2-0 corners advantage for the quarter by the hosts.

The Jumbos finished with a 28-13 margin in shots, including 13-8 on goal. Anslow made 12 saves and Gibby had six. Tufts' lead in penalty corner opportunities was 8-2.
