Hockey Hands #13 Colby College First Loss, 3-1

WATERVILLE, ME (December 10, 2022) - Junior Joel Brandinger scored the game-winning goal on a power play in the third period as the Tufts University men's hockey team won 3-1 at 13th-ranked Colby College in a NESCAC game on Saturday afternoon.

The Jumbos, who added an empty-net goal, put a dent in Colby's previously undefeated, untied start to the 2022-23 season. Tufts is now 3-1-1 in its last five games while improving to 3-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the league.

Colby, who had led 1-0 early this afternoon, drops to 6-1 and 4-1 in NESCAC with the loss.

The Mules took their lead 16 minutes into the game by scoring on a four-on-two break with a one-timer from high in the slot by Dan Juzych off a pass by Alex Bourhas.

Tufts answered quickly though, with senior captain Mason Kohn getting one past Colby goalie Andy Beran from the left circle with assists to Chris Throndson and Jack Hughes. That tied the score 1-1 with 1:46 remaining in the first.

Jumbo freshman goalie Gus Bylin would finish the game with 29 saves, including seven in the final 1:13 of the second period as Colby peppered the Tufts net. The score remained the same at 1-1 through two periods.

In the early part of the third Bylin made a great stop on a shot by Juzych during a three-on-one break on a Colby power-play.

Tufts would get the go-ahead goal on a man-advantage of their own. Kohn won a face-off to the right of the Colby goal, sending it back to junior defenseman Sam Miller. He set up sophomore Tyler Sedlak for a one-timer from the left face-off circle that Beran saved, but Brandinger was there to put home the rebound with 10:56 on the third-period clock.

Bylin and the Jumbo defense would keep the Mules at bay for the remainder of the period. Freshman John Mulvihill punctuated the win with an empty-net goal from the Jumbo neutral zone with nine seconds left.

Colby out-shot Tufts 30-22 with Beran making 19 saves for the hosts.

Including last night's 2-2 tie at Bowdoin, the Jumbos ended their first semester of action with an undefeated weekend. In their last three conference games they have outscored their opponents 10-3.
