Tufts Offense Efficient In Road Win At MIT

CAMBRIDGE, MA (December 10, 2022) -- Five players tallied in double figures Saturday for the No. 13 Tufts University women's basketball team, led by a career-high 19 points from Sofia Gonzalez as the Jumbos knocked off crosstown rival Massachusetts Institute of Technology 86-74 in action from Rockwell Cage Saturday.

The Jumbos (7-1) played 10 players on Saturday, and all but one got onto the score sheet as Tufts shot 54.1 percent from the field including hitting 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from behind the three-point line. Gonzalez got to her career high after making seven of her 12 attempts from the floor, adding seven rebounds and two steals. First-year Sophia Davis got her first extended playing experience of her young career, and made a huge impact with 14 points, five rebounds and three steals in 19 minutes.

Junior Hannah Kelly was 5-of-8 overall, making two of four from deep for 13 points while Caitlyn O'Boyle collected her first double-double of her career with collegiate highs of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Sarah Crossett also added 10 points, three boards and four assists in the win for Tufts. The Jumbos trailed 10-6 early on but posted an 8-0 run to take a 14-10 lead with just under two minutes left in the first quarter after a jumper from Gonzalez.

Tufts took that same four-point edge into the second quarter, and outscored their hosts 30-18 in the frame to take a 49-33 lead into the halftime break. The Jumbos led by as many as 18 points in the third quarter, but MIT (4-5) rallied to get its deficit down to 12 at 67-55 heading to the fourth. Early in the final stanza MIT got as close as nine points but an 11-0 run over 2:36 would help put the game away for Tufts.

The win for Tufts was its 10th over its last 12 contests with MIT, extending its win streak over the Engineers to six dating back to 2001. Paula Pieper scored a game-high 26 points on 10-of-23 shooting, making five triples on the afternoon. Angie Choi also posted 11 points, and Sarah Berman and Alice Hall each collected 10 points in the loss. Tufts out-rebounded its hosts 43-29 on the game, while earning a big 44-24 edge in points in the paint.

The Jumbos will be back in action Sunday afternoon in Cousens Gymnasium with the final game before the exam and Holiday break, hosting No. 2 New York University at 2 p.m. in non-conference play in Medford, MA.
