BRUNSWICK, ME (December 9, 2022) - Host Bowdoin College erased a two-goal deficit in the third period to earn a 2-2 tie against Tufts University in NESCAC men's hockey action Friday night at Watson Arena.
The Jumbos (2-5-1, 1-3-1 NESCAC) had built a 2-0 lead on goals by
Harrison Bazianos and
Brendan Fennell. However, the Polar Bears (4-1-1, 2-1-1) pulled within 2-1 on a goal by Albert Washco with five minutes remaining in the third period, and tied it 2-2 on a penalty-shot goal from Gabe Shipper with 1:22 left in regulation.
Tufts freshman goalie Gus Bylin made four saves in the overtime period to help the Jumbos finish with the 2-2 tie.
The Jumbos had taken a 1-0 lead with a short-handed goal in the first period. While working on five-minute man-advantage, a Bowdoin pass in the Tufts zone went of a Polar Bear skate. Bazianos tapped the puck to
Tyler Sedlak and then joined him to set up a two-on-one. From the right side Sedlak passed over to Bazianos who scored the Jumbos' first shorty of the season at 17:06.
Bylin made 12 saves in the second period to help the Jumbos maintain their 1-0 advantage. Including last Saturday's 5-0 win against Middlebury, Tufts had played 100 minutes without allowing a goal after two periods tonight.
Tufts would expand its lead less than three minutes into the third period on the first collegiate goal by Fennell. On a Bowdoin clearing attempt, Tufts freshman defenseman
Chris Throndson was able to get his stick on the puck with one hand and directed it over to classmate Max Resnik at the blue line. He saw Fennell alone in the slot and sent a pass over that was converted for a 2-0 lead.
After 15 more minutes of shutout play by Tufts in the third, Bowdoin's Washco ended the streak. Polar Bear Luke Wheeler retrieved a loose puck in the left face-off circle, then turned around and fired a pass to Washco at the right of the goal. He held the puck briefly to set up a back-hander that he put past Bylin to make it 2-1.
Then with Tufts on a power-play later in the third, a pass by the Jumbos was deflected out to Shipper who collected it by the red line. He broke in, but was hooked from behind and awarded a penalty shot. He capitalized on the opportunity, going to his back-hand to score and tie the game.
The teams went to overtime for the third straight time in their series. The Polar Bears had better scoring chances in the extra frame, but Bylin was solid for the Jumbos finishing with 38 saves overall.
Alex Kozic had 29 stops for Bowdoin. The hosts finished with a 39-31 advantage in shots. Neither team scored a power-play goal, with the Jumbos getting three attempts and the Polar Bears two.
