SPRINGFIELD - Senor Mac Bredahl scored five of his game-high six goals during a decisive run in the first half that helped lift the visiting and #3 ranked Tufts University men's lacrosse team to a 28-16 victory at Springfield College on Thursday night.
Tufts trailed 4-3 in the middle of the first quarter after the Pride scored four straight goals including two by Riley Burgmyer. Bredahl tied the game at 4-4 for Tufts at 4:55 of the first, initiating an 11-2 run over the next 14 minutes of game action. That had the Jumbos leading 14-6 in the second quarter. Juniors Jack Boyden and Kurt Bruun (pictured) both scored twice during the stretch for the Jumbos, and a man-up goal netted by Duke Alf with an assist to Tommy Swank closed the run.
Springfield would get within five goals (14-9) after scoring three in a row during a span of 37 seconds led by a goal and an assist from Zach Schuette late in the first half. However, that's as close as the hosts would get. A five-goal Jumbo run covering only three minutes from late in the third period until early in the fourth was paced by two tallies from senior Camden Kelleher and put Tufts up 25-12. The victory would soon be their's.
In addition to the six goals by Bredahl, Boyden accumulated four goals and two assists. Kelleher and Bruun both finished with four goals and an assist.
Sophomore Conner Garzone started in goal for Tufts and earned the win with 12 saves in 50+ minutes of play. Junior Cody Wiebe was busy with five saves in the final 9:19 of play. Junior Kyle Adelmann caused two turnovers for Tufts and grabbed seven ground balls in a strong defensive performance.
Springfield's Steven Betsch was the top face-off man in the game winning 25 of 43. Schuette had the most points in the game with eight on four goals and four assists for the Pride. Connor Dubzinski caused three turnovers for Springfield. Jack Hamilton (five saves) and Dean Pesce (nine saves) split halves in goal for the Pride.
Tufts out-shot Springfield 60-47 and edged the hosts in ground balls 40-36.
The Jumbos return to NESCAC action on Sunday at 1 pm against Amherst College. The game was moved from Saturday due to anticipated poor weather.
