WILLIAMSTOWN – The Tufts University women's tennis team, ranked #6 nationally, lost just one match on their way to an 8-1 victory over fellow NESCAC member and 15th-ranked Williams College on Sunday.
The Jumbos started the day strong, going 3-0 in doubles action. The #1 pair of Elle Christensen and Tilly Rigby defeated Williams' Yuu Ishikawa and Zoe Bennett 8-2, joined by an 8-1 victory by the #3 pair of Tufts' Caroline Garrido and Zoe Kava (pictured) over Julia Pham and Maxine Ng. Maggie Dorr and Madeline Suk completed the doubles sweep for the Jumbos with an 8-5 victory in the #2 match to give Tufts the three-match lead heading into singles competition.
In the #1 singles match, Christensen earned a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Katherine Orgielewicz while Kava won her #3 match against Ishikawa 6-4, 6-4. Kava's victory was Tufts' fifth of the day and clinched the team win. Ananya Aggarwal picked up Williams' first and only match win in the fifth singles, defeating Suk 6-2, 6-4.
The Jumbos ended the day with three straight match victories, first in the #4 match, as Nicki Frankel defeated Pham with an exciting 7-6 (2) first set, followed by a 6-2 second set to earn the win. Casey Cummings followed that up with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 victory in the #6 match over Isabel Santiago. In the final match to finish, Rigby had a strong 6-2, 6-2 victory over Bennett to close ot the 8-1 victory for the Jumbos (1-1) in their second match of the spring.
This was the second straight win for Tufts over Williams, including 2019. Tufts had not won against Williams since 1991 prior to that.
Tufts continues their season on Monday, March 21 when they begin their spring break trip by traveling Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas to take on Whitman at 11 am in the first of a four-match road trip.
