BEVERLY - Five Jumbos scored three or more goals as the ninth-ranked Tufts University women's lacrosse team earned a 19-8 non-conference victory at Endicott College in a late afternoon start today.
Margie Carden netted five goals with an assist to lead Tufts with six points. Anna Clarke, Caroline Conaghan (pictured), Kathryn Delaney and Caroline Walter all scored three times for the Jumbos (2-1). Clarke and Conaghan added two assists and Delaney and Walter recorded one each.
Kiana Napolitano scored three times for Endicott, who took their first loss of the year (3-1). Katie Schenk and Carly Pierce both tallied twice for the hosts.
It was a 2-1 game late in the first quarter before Tufts scored three times in the final 92 seconds to lead 5-1, led by a goal and an assist each from Clarke and Conaghan.
Endicott scored the first goal of the second period by Napolitano, and were still within 8-4 after a Alex Palermo goal at 3:40 of the second frame. However, Tufts closed the quarter strongly again with two goals by Walter leading a 3-1 finish over the final three minutes for an 11-5 Jumbo advantage at the break.
Goals by Clarke and Walter to start the second half had Tufts at a 13-5 lead. Endicott scored two of the next three - both by Pierce - making it 14-7, but Tufts netted two goals while down a player to end the period up 16-7. Delaney and Carden scored with 0:31 and 0:14 on the third-quarter clock, respectively.
Tufts won the fourth 3-1 to end with the 19-8 victory.
The Jumbos used three goalies, with Molly Laliberty making three saves in 45 minutes, Courtney Kaufman stopping three shots in 12:04 of action and Pascale de Buren making her college debut in the final three minutes facing no shots. Clarke, Kate Wujciak and Laliberty all caused two turnovers for the Jumbos.
The visitors dominated draws with Madeleine Delay winning seven and Clarke taking five as Tufts had a 22-9 advantage in the category.
Lydia Akins had 12 saves in the Endicott net. Schenk added two caused turnovers and three ground balls to her game. The Jumbos finished with a 41-17 advantage in shots.
Tufts hosts 23rd-ranked University of Chicago on Saturday at Bello Field with a 1 pm start.
