MEDFORD – In a great performance at both ends of the field, the ninth-ranked Tufts University women's lacrosse team outscored the #23 University of Chicago Maroons 17-3 on Saturday afternoon at Bello Field.
The Jumbos (3-1) had 10 different goal scorers on the day, including four from freshman midfielder Caroline Conaghan and three from freshman attack Margie Carden. Lulu Hardy, Zoe Torok and Becky Van Kirk were the goal scorers for Chicago (4-1).
The Jumbos got on the board first, just under four minutes into the game on an Anna Clarke (pictured) goal, but the Maroons answered right back with a goal by Hardy just over three minutes later to tie it up at one. Lally Johnson had the assist for Chicago. Two Tufts freshmen scored the next two goals of the game as Genna Gibbons sent a shot past Chicago goalie Rachel Keefe with 7:14 left in the quarter and Conaghan followed that up with a free-position goal with 4:07 left to make it a 3-1 game. Chicago's Torok went on to score just two minutes later to make it a one-goal game, but the Jumbos ended the quarter with two goals in under two minutes by Carden and junior Caroline Walter.
Tufts shut the Maroons out in the second quarter, outscoring them 6-0. Conaghan started the quarter off with two consecutive goals for the hat trick, including one on a free-position opportunity. The Jumbos played extremely tight defense, limiting the Maroons' ability to create quality chances, and after a Chicago shot went wide, the Jumbos moved down the field quickly, and Alexa Amorosino fired a shot past Keefe in close to the crease to extend the Tufts lead to six. Four minutes later, Jumbo senior goalie Molly Laliberty made a great save on a free-position shot to give Tufts possession and Clarke was given a free-position shot at the other end that she finished for her second goal. Carden also scored her second goal of the game just over two minutes later with the assist from Mae Briody and after a Chicago yellow card, freshman Ella Lesperance scored a man-up goal after receiving a pass from fellow freshman Kate Mastrobuono with just 18 seconds left. Tufts went into halftime with an 11-2 lead.
The strong defensive play from the 'Bos continued in the second half, as they let up just one goal in the half and scored three in each quarter. Conaghan wasted no time, scoring her fourth goal just 19 seconds into the third quarter on a free-position shot and sophomore Madeline Delaney added a goal just 1:23 later to make it 13-2. Carden earned her hat trick with just under nine minutes remaining in the third, sending a shot into the back of the net before Chicago scored for the final time of the game with 3:51 remaining, on a shot from Van Kirk. The 3-0 fourth quarter for Tufts was started by Lesperance's second goal of the game at the 12:04 mark and Briody was credited for her second assist of the game. Mastrobuono also earned her second assist of the game on the next Jumbo goal by sophomore Lucy Hodge, and with just three seconds left on the clock, after receiving a pass from Lesperance, freshman Maddy Charest fired a shot into the goal to end the game with the final score of 17-3.
Tufts dominated the shots battle, firing off 40 compared to Chicago's 11. The Jumbos also scooped up more ground balls, finishing the game with 20 while the Maroons had nine. Chicago made 12 saves on the day as Tufts finished with five (all by Laliberty). Clarke won four draws, caused two turnovers and scored twice for the Jumbos.
The Jumbos are on spring break and will travel to play #2-ranked Gettysburg College in a 4 pm matchup on Wednesday, March 23.
