CLAREMONT, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Tufts University men's tennis team opened its spring break trip to California with a 5-4 victory at #19 Pomona-Pitzer on Monday afternoon.
Senior co-captain Isaac Gorelik earned the match-clinching victory for Tufts (2-1) in #1 singles over Hayden Snyder in a tight 7-5, 7-6 match.
The host Sagehens had taken a 2-1 lead out of doubles. The lone Tufts victory came in #3 doubles where Gorelik and senior Paris Pentousis remained unbeaten early in the spring season with an 8-5 win against Ethan Lee and Eshaan Lumba. In #1 doubles, the #10 in the nation PP pair of Jansen Comadena and Owen Kelley defeated Jumbos Rishabh Sharda and Josh Belandres in a tie-breaker.
The Jumbos would win four out of six in singles to come from behind for the victory. Prior to Gorelik, Tufts had a three-set win by Sharda (pictured) in #2 singles where he came back after losing the first game to Charlie Stark and won 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Derin Acaroglu had a 6-3, 7-6 victory in the fifth spot. Belandres won sixth singles against Kelley by close 7-5, 7-6 (5) scores.
Tufts continues its trip with a match at 22nd-ranked Caltech on Wednesday.
