PASADENA, Calif. -- The 12th-ranked Tufts University men's tennis team continued its spring break trip with an impressive 8-1 victory at #22 California Institute of Technology (Caltech) on Wednesday.
The Jumbos (3-1) took two out of three in doubles and then swept singles, where they lost just one set. It was the first defeat in four matches for the Beavers, who fell to 7-3.
Tufts took a 2-0 lead in doubles with wins in the second and third spots. Isaac Gorelik and Paris Pentousis moved up in the order to #2 and won 8-2, while Derin Acaroglu and Niko Hereford won the third match 8-4. Tufts' Josh Belandres and Rishabh Sharda nearly earned a sweep for the Jumbos, but lost to Kyle McCandless and Daniel Wen in a tiebreaker 8-7 (6).
Pentousis rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win at #4 to start singles for the Jumbos. Sharda followed with an equally efficient 6-0, 6-1 victory at #2, putting Tufts ahead 4-1 in the team column. Vuk Vuksanovic then clinched the match for the visitors with his 6-2, 6-0 win in the third singles contest.
Tufts rounded out the singles sweep with wins by Gorelik at #1 (6-1, 7-5), Acaroglu at #5 (6-7 (6), 6-4, 10-8) and Jack Moldenhauer (pictured) in the sixth spot (6-2, 7-5).
The Jumbos will put their undefeated week on the line twice tomorrow with matches against Pacific (Ore.) and UC Santa Cruz in Palm Springs.
