GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Freshman Margie Carden and graduate student Claire Wright (pictured) scored goals 17 seconds apart late in the first half, starting a five-goal Tufts run overall, as the #10 Jumbos pulled away for an impressive 16-9 win at second-ranked Gettysburg College on Wednesday afternoon.
The game was tied at 7-7 when Carden scored on a free-position shot with 1:46 remaining in the second quarter. Following a draw control by Anna Clarke - one of her nine in the game - Wright scored at 1:29 of the second for a 9-7 Jumbo lead. Tufts goalie Molly Laliberty made a save on a free-position shot with 30 seconds left and Tufts took the two-goal lead into halftime.
Mae Briody then set up Jumbo goals by Madeline Delaney and Clarke early in the second half, followed by a Caroline Conaghan goal that put Tufts up 12-7. Katie Fullowan broke the run for Gettysburg with 3:34 to go in the third, but the Jumbos then ran off three straight to start the fourth - Delaney, Wright and Conaghan - to lead 15-9. The teams traded goals in the final six minutes for the 16-9 final.
Tufts (4-1) was tremendous defensively in the second half, allowing just two goals and six shots on goal. Laliberty finished with 10 saves overall, while Mary Grace Reynolds caused three turnovers and scooped up two ground balls.
The Jumbos had led 6-3 early, but the Bullets rallied to tie the score at 6-6 on three straight tallies in less than three minutes. Emma Joyce answered for Tufts, but Jenna King followed for Gettysburg 30 seconds later making it 7-7. That's when Tufts decisively took control of the game late in the first half and into early in the second half.
Conaghan scored four and assisted three to lead Tufts, while Wright matched her career-high with four goals. Ananda Kao won three ground balls.
King, Fullowan and Maddi Seibel scored twice each for Gettysburg (5-2). Lily Macatte caused three turnovers and took three ground balls. Two Bullet goalies stopped just six of Tufts' 22 shots.
The Jumbos return home and to conference play on Saturday against Trinity College. Game time is noon at Bello Field.
