HARTFORD - Senior Mac Bredahl and junior Jack Boyden both had four goals and three assists today as the third-ranked Tufts Univerity men's lacrosse team remained unbeaten (6-0, 3-0 NESCAC) with a 21-10 victory at Trinity College. Trinity falls to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the NESCAC.
Trinity came out firing and led 6-4 with 1:08 left in the first quarter after the second goal of the game by senior attackman Connor McCulloch from classmate Luke Valentino. Junior Bill Puccio and junior Cullen Wolff scored twice in the opening stanza for the Bantams. However, Tufts scored the next nine goals, including three in the final 42 seconds of the first. Strikes by Boyden, freshman Cam Delcristo and by Bredahl as time expired gave the Jumbos a 7-6 lead at the first break.
Bredahl scored three times for Tufts during the 9-0 run which gave the visitors a 13-6 advantage. Valentino and Puccio scored late in the second quarter to make it 14-8 at the half. Max Ettinghausen (pictured) tallied twice in the second quarter for the Jumbos, including a man-up goal.
The Jumbos outscored Trinity 5-2 in the third quarter to lead 18-10, including Bredahl's fourth of the game, long-strick goals by Taggart Eymer and Joey Waldbaum, and another freshman tally by Charlie Tagliaferri. The Jumbos then had all three goals in the final period including the first collegiate scores by Drew Guida (up) and Callum Wood.
The teams combined for 102 shots with Tufts finishing with a slight edge, 54-48, but the Jumbos also held a 58 to 37 advantage on ground balls. Faceoffs and turnovers were about even statistically, and Tufts converted on three of four extra-man chances.
Kyle Adelmann continued his strong defensive work for the Jumbos with eight ground balls and two caused turnovers. Waldbaum had six GB's with a caused turnover, and Michael Ayers forced two Bantam miscues. Conner Garzone started in goal for Tufts and made 18 saves, while Cody Wiebe did not allow a goal in the fourth quarter while making six saves. Parker Merril was 9 for 15 on face-offs.
Puccio paced Trinity with four goals. McCulloch finished with five points on two goals and three assists. Sophomore face-off man Dane Crowley won 17 of 32 attempts and scooped nine ground balls, and junior middie Jackson Trimmer added three ground balls. In goal, sophomore Cooper Yaccino made 15 saves in three quarters and rookie Jordan Opdahl had four in the fourth.
Tufts returns home to welcome 10th-ranked Union College on Tuesday night in a 6 PM start.
