MEDFORD – Four different Jumbo players had multi-goal games as the #10 Tufts University women's lacrosse team earned a NESCAC victory over the #8 Trinity College Bantams by a score of 13-5 on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Anna Clarke and freshman Margie Carden both finished the game with three goals for the Jumbos, while sophomore Madeline Delaney (pictured) and freshman Caroline Conaghan both scored two goals with Delaney adding an assist. Christine Taylor led the way for the Bantams, scoring three goals and Lily Ives scored the other two Trinity goals.
It was Ives that got Trinity on the board first just over one minute into the game, but Clarke answered with two consecutive goals - one with free-position - to give the Jumbos the 2-1 lead. Clarke added one more goal at the end of the first quarter after Taylor scored her first of the game for the Bantams to make it 3-2 in favor of Tufts going into the second quarter.
The Jumbos (5-1, 2-1 NESCAC) blanked the Bantams in the second quarter with tight defensive play and great goaltending by Molly Laliberty. They scored five goals in the quarter to give them an 8-2 lead at halftime. Conaghan scored two unassisted goals in the quarter, along with goals from Delaney, Carden, and Mae Briody. Briody also added an assist in the quarter while Kathryn Delaney assisted Briody's goal.
Carden started the second half with an up goal just over three minutes in after receiving a pass from Madeline Delaney. The Jumbos scored again a few minutes later when Grace Frerichs fired a hard shot past Trinity goalie Gabriella Young. Briody earned her second assist on the goal. Trinity scored for the first time since the middle of the first quarter when Taylor netted two consecutive up goals to bring the score to 10-4 in favor of the Jumbos. Tufts' Sami Rothstein finished the third quarter with a free-position goal with just 28 seconds remaining, giving the Jumbos a seven-goal lead with one quarter left.
Young was excellent in the second half for the Bantams (5-3, 2-2), though Tufts had the game pretty well in had at the point. Madeline Delaney scored her second goal of the game four minutes into the fourth quarter for Tufts, and then there were no goals until Ives scored her second goal with just one minute left. As time expired, Carden received a pass from Lucy Hodge and finished it for the goal, beating the buzzer and giving Tufts the 13-5 victory.
Tufts outshot the Bantams 39-17 in the game and Young finished with 14 saves compared to Laliberty's seven. Tufts also had the advantage in ground balls 19-13. Madison Lehan had two caused turnovers and four ground balls for the hosts, while Clarke won fur draws. Alisyn McNamara for Trinity grabbed four ground balls and Emma Alpaugh took three draw controls.
The Jumbos will now travel to MIT on Wednesday, March 30th to take on the Engineers at 6 pm.
