Men's Lacrosse Defeated by Union 17-12 in Top 10 Battle

Box Score

MEDFORD - Sophomore goalie Dan Donahue made 17 saves and senior Peter Burnes scored five times with an assist as seventh-ranked Union College upended #3 Tufts University 17-12 in a top 10 men's lacrosse game Tuesday night at Bello Field.

Freshman face-off man Parker Merril (pictured) won 23 of 31 draws for Tufts (6-1), but the Jumbos couldn't covert on their possessions like usual. Donahue, who had 11 second-quarter saves on 12 shots on goal, was a major reason for that. The Dutchmen remained unbeaten at 8-0.

Tufts led just once, at 3-2 in the first period when Boyden scored with 7:11 remaining. The Dutchmen finished the first with four of the next five goals - two by Burnes and a goal with an assist by senior Brian Davis - to lead 6-4 after 15 minutes.

The Jumbos scored a man-up goal by senior Duke Alf at 9:34 of the second quarter, but that was all Donohue would allow in the frame. Union answered with goals by seniors Hayden Frey and Kieran McGovern to lead 8-5 at the half.

The Dutchmen continued their momentum into the second half with the first two tallies, including one by Burnes at the 10-minute mark for a 10-5 advantage. Senior Camden Kelleher and Alf scored back-to-back for Tufts making it 10-7, but Union had the next three and led by six (13-7) with 4:43 to go in the third. The Jumbos finished the period strong though, with goals by Alf, senior Mac Bredahl and senor defenseman Matthew Lane pulling the hosts within 13-10 heading into the fourth.

Union was again able to stem Tufts' momentum though, scoring the first three goals of the fourth - two by Frey - to lead 16-10. Boyden had back-to-back goals for the Jumbos and it was a 16-12 game, but sophomoreZ Zach Davis would score into any empty cage to wrap up the win for the Dutchmen.

Alf scored three times for Tufts, while Waldbaum won five ground balls and junior defenseman Kyle Adelmann caused four turnovers. Sophomore goalie Conner Garzone had seven saves.

Frey finished with four goals and an assist for Union, while junior defenseman Clint Gourdeau had three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Tufts led in shots (53-42) and ground balls (44-34), but committed a season-high 31 turnovers.
