Women's Lacrosse Scores Season-High Goals in 22-3 Win at MIT

MEDFORD - The Tufts University women's lacrosse team scored the game's first 10 goals and went on to a 22-3 victory at neighboring rival MIT on Wednesday evening.

It's the most goals scored this season for Tufts (6-1) with 14 different players scoring goals. Caroline Walter and Margie Carden both had three goals, while Anna Clarke, Ananda Kao, Ella Lesperance and Sami Rothstein all had two. Among the eight Jumbos who scored once, defenders Becca Gable and Kathryn Fernandopulle (pictured) had the first of their careers.

Seven different Jumbos scored goals in the first quarter as Tufts took a 7-0 lead. Starting goalie Molly Laliberty stopped two Engineer shots while blanking the hosts for the first 15 minutes.

Carden scored her second of the game less than a minute into the second period, then Gable tallied her goal and Clarke scored with free-position to put Tufts up 10-0. MIT's Nora Donnelly scored to end the Jumbo run, but Tufts got the next four to lead 14-1 on Kao's goal at just under thee minutes until halftime. Walter scored twice during the Jumbos' 4-0 stretch. Engineer Lindsey Gambino scored while MIT was down a player with 16 seconds remaining in the half and it was 14-2 at intermission.

The Jumbos had another shutout quarter in the third, with back-up goalie Courtney Kaufman needing to make just one save. Genna Gibbons, Lesperance and Carden (her third) had the goals and Tufts was at a 17-2 advantage heading into the fourth.

Delaney Goetz had MIT's third goal of the game early in the fourth, but the Jumbos finished the game with four more for the 22-3 final.

Gibbons had four draw controls for Tufts, while Fernandopulle caused four turnovers and collected four ground balls.

Christine Padalino scooped up a game-high seven ground balls for MIT (3-4). Grace Harrington finished with two caused turnovers and Goetz had an assist to go with her goal. Elena Boal saved five shots and Kiely Smiga-McManus made three saves.

The Jumbos will play #1-ranked Middlebury College at Bello Field on Saturday at 2 pm.
