MEDFORD – The Tufts University men's lacrosse team scored 15 goals in the first quarter en route to a 27-7 victory against Colby College in the season and conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Bello Field.
Junior Jack Boyden (pictured) scored four goals with two assists to lead the Jumbos in the first quarter and finished the game with five and three. Senior co-captain Mac Bredahl had three goals and an assist in the first 15 minutes and recorded a 10-point game overall (6 goals, 4 assists). Kurt Bruun had a pair of goals and assists in the first quarter and was 3-2 overall. Camden Kelleher (2 goals, 3 assists) was another Jumbo with a big-game scoring total (2 goals, 3 assists). Freshman Charlie Tagliaferri had his first two collegiate goals during the first period, while long-stick classmate Michael Ayers also had one.
Tufts' 27 goals tied for the third-most in a game in program history.
Colby didn't score its first goal until 1:21 remained in the opening quarter, with Jack Rickards netting one. However, the Jumbos would get the next six and led 18-1 following Duke Alf's goal with 10:28 remaining in the first half.
The visiting Mules would record back-to-back goals following that, with Noah Froio and Jack Goller scoring for an 18-3 game. Tufts would lead 23-3 at intermission though, as freshman defenseman Joey Waldbaum scored his first collegiate goal man-down set up by Bredahl at 5:39 of the second.
The teams would be even on the scoreboard for the second half at four goals apiece. Jake Surette had two for Colby. Max Ettinghausen tallied his first collegiate goal for the Jumbos.
The high-flying Tufts attack put 72 shots at three Colby goalkeepers, while the Mules finished with 39. Conner Garzone earned his first win in the Tufts net, making seven saves in one half of action. Cody Wiebe (3 saves) and Eugene Yoon (1 save) also played for the hosts. Matt Suffredini took the loss for Colby, making seven saves along the way.
Both of the Jumbos' top two face-off men were successful today with Aidan Hesse winning 9 of 16 and Parker Merri going 14 for 18. Taggart Eymer and Kyle Adelmann both caused a pair of turnovers each for Tufts. Ayers scooped up six ground balls defensively.
Will Dodge and Ethan Storey finished with two caused turnovers apiece for Colby, who were led offensively by Surette's two goals and an assist.
