Women's Lacrosse Stays Ahead of Williams College 13-9 in Home Opener

Box Score

MEDFORD - Freshman Margie Carden scored four goals and an assist to lead second-ranked Tufts to a 13-9 victory over Williams College in a NESCAC women's lacrosse contest at Bello Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Jumbos (1-1) also received three goals and an assist from Claire Wright and two goals each by Kathryn Delaney and Genna Gibbons. Molly Lalibety made 13 saves in goal.

Despite opening their season with an 0-2 weekend, Williams had plenty of good moments today and were led by a four goals and an assist from Shea van den Broek and three tallies by Grace Collier.

After Collier scored the game's first goal, Tufts got three in row including two by Wright to lead 3-1. However, van den Broek's first of the day pulled the Ephs with 3-2 for the end of the first quarter.

Carden then scored twice to lead a three-goal Jumbo run that put the hosts up 6-2 early in the second quarter. However, the Ephs were able to remain within striking distance by scoring the next three including two more goals by van den Broek later in the period which made it a 6-5 game. Carden's third goal of the quarter though had Tufts leading 7-5 at intermission.

The widest margin of the afternoon came early in the second half as four straight by Tufts gave them an 11-5 lead. Carden had a goal and an assist during the run, which also included a goal by freshman Caroline Conaghan. However, Williams was able to close the period with three straight goals including a fluke by Mason Yonge. She sent a pass towards the front of the net that was missed by her teammate, but the ball found its way into the net with six seconds left in the third for an 11-8 score.

In the middle of the fourth, a save by Laliberty at one end turned into a free-position opportunity by Gibbons at the other and she scored to put Tufts ahead by four (12-8). The fourth goal of the game by van den Broek brought the Ephs back within three, but Tufts' fifth free-position goal of the game by Delaney would close the scoring.

The Jumbos out-shot the Ephs 33-28. Madison Lehan was strong defensively for the Jumbos with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Williams starting goalie Caitlyn Joyce played 37 minutes and made 10 saves while allowing 11 of Tufts' goals. Anj Raman finished off with two saves and two goals allowed in 23 minutes. Molly Hellman had two caused turnovers, three ground balls and scored a goal for the visitors.

The Jumbos are at Amherst College next Saturday for a 1 pm start.
