LEWISTON, Maine - The eighth-ranked Tufts University men's lacrosse team scored a school-record 32 goals on Wednesday in a NESCAC matchup at Bates, earning a 32-13 victory.
Tufts (9-2, 6-1 NESCAC)) had 17 total goal-scorers and freshman Max Ettinghausen (pictured) led the way with five goals. Six other Jumbos had multi-goal games as Mac Bredahl and Jack Boyden both scored four, Camden Kelleher and Tommy Swank both scored three and Ethan Gatto netted two. Boyden also tallied six assists in the win. Bates' Will Schinabeck led the Bobcats (0-11, 0-8 NESCAC) with three goals and Bobby Conroy and Jack Lousararian each finished with two.
The Jumbos scored the first three goals of the game with goals from Swank, Charlie Tagliaferri and Matthew Lane, but Bates halted the run with a Ben Miller goal to make it 3-1. This is when Tufts kicked it into gear, scoring the next five goals. Bates retaliated with two of the game's next three goals, but the Jumbos outscored Bates 5-3 in the remainder of the first quarter to send it to the second with the score at 13-4.
After trading goals to start off the second, Tufts scored eight straight, with Ettinghausen scoring two of the eight goals. Bates followed that with three of their own consecutively before Bredahl ended the second quarter with a goal to make it 23-8 going into halftime. The Jumbos stayed hot to start the second half, going on a five-goal run with goals by Duke Alf, Boyden, Callum Wood, Jered Kenny and Cole Salton. Jackson Sell netted one for the Bobcats before Tufts went on another run of three goals to end the third quarter. The Bobcats outscored Tufts in the fourth quarter 4-1 with goals from Lousararian, Schinabeck, Conroy and Cooper Lance. Gatto scored the lone fourth-quarter goal for the Jumbos to give Tufts the 32-13 victory.
Four goalies were used in the game for the Jumbos, as Conner Garzone played the first half, making seven saves with a ground ball. Cody Wiebe played 15 minutes with three saves and Eugene Yoon made three saves as well with two ground balls in the fourth quarter. Shane Molloy also saw time in net for Tufts.
Bates goalies Spencer Wood and Garrett Fitzsimons each had four saves while Luke Heafey made six saves in the fourth quarter for the Bobcats. Tufts scooped up 45 ground balls compared to Bates' 31 and had the advantage in faceoffs 26-22.
The previous Jumbo record for goals had been 31 versus Bates last year.
Next, the Jumbos will host Wesleyan on Saturday, April 16 at 1 pm in another conference matchup.
