MEDFORD - Down 10-6 at the half, the eighth-ranked Tufts University men's lacrosse team scored seven goals in the third quarter to tie the game and then out-scored #15 Wesleyan University 4-1 in the fourth to take a 17-14 win over the Cardinals in a meeting of top NESCAC teams at Bello Field this afternoon.
Senior Camden Kelleher scored twice with an assist in the third quarter and classmate Mac Bredahl added a goal and two assists. Senior Duke Alf then scored three times in the fourth quarter. They were among 16 seniors recognized post-game by the Jumbo program today.
Sam Jean had scored for the visiting Cardinals with 22 seconds remaining in the first quarter to give them a 5-4 lead. Wesleyan then out-scored the Jumbos 5-2 in the second period, with Justin Hazard scoring twice and Matt Gill talying a goal and two assists. The visitors out-shot the Jumbos 30-24 in the first half while building their four-goal lead.
The Jumbo comeback was kicked into gear by three goals in 15 seconds by Tommy Swank, face-off man Parker Merril and Kelleher to tie the game at 11 apiece. Two goals set up by Bredahl - to Alf and Kelleher - sandwiched between two goals by Wesleyan's Hazard made it 13-13 heading into the fourth.
The Tufts defense would clamp down allowing just one goal and sophomore goalie Conner Garzone would make three saves in the final 15 minutes as the Jumbos pulled away for the victory. They held the Cardinals scoreless on two man-up opportunities, and Merril was 5 for 6 on face-offs in the decisive final period.
Kelleher finished with four goals and three assists, Bredahl accumulated three and two and Alf scored a career-high four goals to lead the Jumbos offensively. Jack Boyden added two goals and four assists. Garzone made 16 saves, Merril won 25 of 34 draws and senior Matthew Lane (pictured) caused three turnovers for the Jumbos while picking up two ground balls.
Hazard scored a game-high five goals with an assist for Wesleyan, while Jake Sexton scored three with an assist. Nolan Collins recorded five ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Colin Hanley made 16 saves in goal.
Shots finished 54-48 in Tufts' favor, as did ground balls (39-34). Tufts improved to 10-2 overall and 7-1 in the league, while the Cardinals fell to 9-3 and 5-3.
