MEDFORD - After taking two out of three in doubles, Tufts won five of the six singles matches in staight sets as the #10 ranked Jumbos defeated #15 Bowdoin College 7-2 in NESCAC women's tennis action at Lower Campus Courts on Saturday.
Head coach Kate Bayard's Jumbos have now won nine of their last 10 matches and are 9-2 overall (4-2 conferennce). The Polar Bears dipped below .500 to 5-6 and are now 3-2 against league competition.
With doubles tied at 1-1, Tufts' Tilly Rigby and Elle Christensen won the #2 match 8-6 to give the Jumbos an advantage heading into singles. The Jumbos' #1 doubles pair of Maggie Dorr with Caroline Garrido dropped a very competitive 8-7 (6) match versus Lizzy Yu and Hannah Buckhout from Bowdoin. Nicki Frankel and Rebecca Lim rolled to a #3 doubles win for Tufts.
All six singles matches were one-sided. Five of them went to Tufts. Madeline Suk (pictured) lost just one game on the sixth singles court, and Frankel also gave up just three games at #4 taking the hosts to a 4-1 team score. Rigby in the #1 match with a 6-0, 6-2 final against Yu won the clincher.
Casey Cummings put Tufts up 6-1 with her fifth singles win, and Christensen pushed the Jumbo lead to 7-1 with a #2 singles victory before Bowdoin's Evelyn Safar recorded the visitors' lone singles win in the third spot (6-3, 6-2).
The Jumbos will continue a busy weekend with a match against fourth-ranked Emory University at home tomorrow.
