MEDFORD - Jane Earley and Susan Rowley both scored three goals as the top-ranked Middlebury College women's lacrosse team won a key conference contest at #7 Tufts University, 14-7, today.
The host Jumbos (6-2, 2-2 NESCAC) led 2-1 after Claire Wright scored a free-position goal with 4:05 remaining in the first quarter. However, the Panthers scored the next four goals with three in a row by Earley to lead 5-2 with nine minutes on the second-quarter clock. Tufts would get within 5-3 and 6-4 on free-position goals by Genna Gibbons and Caroline Conaghan (pictured), but Middlebury closed the half with a Rowley from Kelcey Dion connection to lead 7-4 at the break.
Middlebury took control of the game early in the second half, scoring three straight to lead 10-4 on back-to-back up goals by Niki Mormile and Hope Shue. The Jumbos would close the third with some momentum, as Mae Briody scored a free-position goal and Caroline Walter tallied with a man-advantage bringing the score to 10-6 heading into the fourth.
However, the Panthers were able to keep a safe distance as Maggie Coughlin and Anna Spehr scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter for a 12-6 advantage. With Tufts' Emma Joyce, and Middlebury's Anna Spehr and Grace Getman finishing the scoring, the seven-goal margin at the end was the largest of the game.
Conaghan scored twice with an assist to lead Tufts offensively. Madison Lehan continued her strong defensive season for the Jumbos with three caused turnovers, while Anna Clarke won seven draw controls. Molly Laliberty had seven saves in goal.
Annie Enrietto made 10 saves in the Middlebury net, several on free-position attempts where the Jumbos finished 4 for 10. Erica Barr led the Panthers with seven draw controls, while Kylie Wilson scooped up two ground balls and caused a turnover. Shue, Getman and Spehr had two goals each for the visitors.
Shots finished 25-24 for Tufts, while ground balls favored the Panthers 13-8 as did draws 14-11.
