SOMERVILLE - Tenth-ranked Tufts University earned an impressive 8-1 victory against #18 Washington and Lee University in a non-league women's tennis match between top 20 teams at Lower Campus Courts on Wednesday afteroon. The Jumbos are now 11-2 overall.
The Jumbos swept doubles, including a pair of decisive 8-2 wins at the #1 and #2 spots. The top pair of Tilly Rigby and Elle Christensen and the second tandem of Maggie Dorr and Caroline Garrido had those victories. The third doubles team of Nicki Frankel and Rebecca Lim had an 8-6 win as well.
Tufts would take five out of six in singles. Casey Cummings (pictured) was dominant in the #4 match, winning 6-0 and 6-1. Lim, getting the start at sixth singles, won nearly as quickly with 6-0, 6-2 scores. The clinch for Tufts came in the fifth match where Madeline Suk recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win.
The lone win for Washington and Lee (9-5) was in the first singles contest where Taylor Garcia won a second-set tie-breaker to take the match against Tilly Rigby (6-3, 7-6(1)). The Jumbos closed out the team victory in second singles where Elle Christensen won 6-2, 6-4, and with Frankel going three sets to continue her success 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 on the third singles spot.
The Jumbos have NESCAC action at home against Colby College on Saturday.
