MEDFORD – The #10 Tufts University women's tennis team swept doubles play on their way to an 8-1 victory over the #26 Colby College Mules on Saturday.
The team of Maggie Dorr and Caroline Garrido started the day off with an 8-0 shutout victory for the Jumbos in the #2 doubles match, defeating Colby's Lindsey Hernandez and Caroline Kittle. Zoe Kava and Madeline Suk followed that up with another shutout victory for Tufts, defeating the team of Kat Dougherty and Emilia Callery in the #3 match. In the #1 doubles match, Tilly Rigby and Elle Christensen (pictured) clinched the sweep of doubles with an 8-2 victory over Sam Riordan and Sydney Landau.
The Jumbos started off singles play with five consecutive wins. Nicki Frankel got it started with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kittle in the #4 match, while Kava clinched the match victory for the Jumbos with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Hernandez in the #3 match. Suk and Casey Cummings picked up quick victories in the #6 and #5 matches, with Suk earning a 6-0, 6-2 win while Cummings defeated Dougherty 6-1, 6-0.
Christensen competed in second singles, earning a hard-fought victory over Landau 6-3, 7-6 (5), and the lone Colby victory came in the #1 match as Riordan defeated Rigby in three sets 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-8 to finish the day with an 8-1 score in favor of the Jumbos.
With the win, Tufts has now won four consecutive matches as they hand Colby their second consecutive match loss. The Jumbos entered Saturday as the fifth-ranked team in the region while Colby came in at #7.
Tufts will now host Bates in a NESCAC matchup on Thursday, April 28 at 3 pm.
