MEDFORD – Junior Jack Boyden had a 10-point game with seven goals and three assists as the Tufts University men's lacrosse team won its NESCAC Championship Quarterfinal today 19-14 over Connecticut College.
The Jumbos (14-2), seeded first in the tournament, will host the semifinal and championship round of conference tournament play next weekend (May 7-8) at Bello Field. Tufts will play four-seed Wesleyan in the semifinals on Saturday.
Connecticut College, led today by five goals and two assists from Jared Rainville, saw their season end with a 5-9 record.
The visiting Camels scored the first two goals of the game today by Gus Mazzocca and Nick Farnham. Tufts had the next four by four different players to lead 4-2 on Boyden's first assisted by Mac Bredahl. Rainville netted his first to close the first quarter with Tufts ahead 4-3.
The Jumbos would outscore Conn 5-2 in the second quarter, with Boyden netting three of the goals and assisting another. Camden Kelleher set up two Boyden's goals and had one of his own as the Jumbos built a 9-5 lead at the half. Rainville and Jack Tenzer scored the Camels' second-quarter goals.
Boyden opened the second half with two goals during a three-goal Jumbo run that gave the hosts a 12-5 advantage. The Camels kept the Jumbos from getting two far away with goals by Mazzocca, JJ Ford and Sean Fox making it a 14-8 game with three minutes to go in the third stanza. However, the Jumbos used that time to score twice more – Kelleher and a long-stick goal by Matthew Lane – and led 16-8 heading into the fourth.
Tufts had a man-down goal by Charlie Tagliaferri with 9:42 on the fourth-quarter clock to lead 18-9. The Camels would score five times over the remainder of the contest, two by Rainville and a goal with an assist from Ford, making the final score closer than it should have been at 19-14.
Kelleher finished with three goals and three helpers for the Jumbos, while Bredahl scored a goal and set up four others. Joey Waldbaum caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls, Mason Kohn won 11 of 15 face-offs and Conner Garzone saved 11 shots in nearly 54 minutes of goalie play.
Ford added two goals and three assists for the Camels, who got 13 saves from Will Rice. Mazzocca scored three. Brendan Trovato caused two turnovers and Declan Kuhn had five ground balls.
The Camels out-shot Tufts 53-48, though Tufts had a 38-32 ground-ball advantage.
