WILLIAMSTOWN - The Tufts University men's lacrosse team outscored Williams College 6-1 in the second quarter, leading to a 19-10 NESCAC victory over the Ephs on Wednesday evening. Senior Camden Kelleher (pictured) scored three times in the final five minutes of the second quarter and finished with five goals and two assists. Mac Bredahl had four goals and four assists for the Jumbos.
Tufts got back on track after two straight losses, improving to 7-2 and 4-1 in the confernce. Williams dropped to 5-4 and lost for the second time in six league games (4-2).
The Jumbos scored the first three goals of the game, with Bredahl scoring and assisting goals. However, the host Ephs would rally to tie the score at 4-4 with goals by four different players including Bjorn Davidson which tied the game with 2:39 remaining in the first. Tufts scored twice in 12 seconds - Kelleher and Jack Boyden - to lead 6-4, but Williams' Spencer Goodbar would make it it a 6-5 game at the end of one.
The teams traded goals in the first five minutes of the second quarter, but then the Jumbos built some momentum. Bredahl and Boyden had scores 51 seconds apart for a 9-6 Jumbo advantage, then Kelleher ripped his three in a row including the third with just five seconds left in the quarter to put the visitors up 12-6 at halftime.
Tufts then took total control by scoring the first three goals of the third quarter - Tommy Swank, Charlie Tagliaferri and Kevin Christmas - for a 15-6 advantage. Williams had the last two of the third period by Harrison Cross and Tim Saffold to make it 15-8, but the Jumbos would again score the first three of the fourth quarter (Bredahl, Joey Waldbaum, Swank) for a 10-goal advantage (18-8). Williams' Jake Hasse had his two goals late in the fourth, but Tufts had already tucked this one away.
Parker Merril was strong on face-offs again for Tufts, winning 22 of 31. He's 100 for 158 (.633) on the season. Michael Ayers had four ground balls tonight, Waldbaum picked up three and Matthew Lane caused two turnovers. Conner Garzone stopped 10 shots in goal.
Haase and Calvin Caputo led the Ephs with two goals each. Will Bock was busy with 22 saves in net while allowing 19 goals, and James Hemmer had four CT's and five ground balls defensively.
Shots finished 58-30 for Tufts, while the Jumbos won ground balls too 37-30.
