Men's Lacrosse Pulls Away from Camels in Fourth for 21-14 Win

Box Score

MEDFORD - Senior Camden Kelleher scored a career-high six goals leading the eighth-ranked Tufts University men's lacrosse team to a 21-14 NESCAC victory against Connecticut College on Saturday at Bello Field.

The visiting Camels had closed to within 14-12 late in the third quarter before Jumbo Duke Alf (pictured) scored to put Tufts up 15-12. At that point, the game went into a lightning delay lasting more than an hour. When play resumed, Tufts (8-2, 5-1 NESCAC) outscored Connecticut College (4-4, 3-3) 6-2 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory.

Jumbo Tommy Swank scored the game's first two goals and Jared Rainville assisted a pair of goals for Connecticut College as the score was tied 3-3 early. Goals by Mac Bredahl set up by Jack Boyden and then Boyden scoring one of his own put Tufts up 5-3 at the end of one, a lead they would ultimately not relinquish.

Tufts would build its margin to 11-6 by halftime led by Parker Merril's nine wins on 10 second-quarter face-offs. The Jumbos had the first three goals of the second quarter to lead 8-3 three minutes into the period. Conn battled back by scoring three of the next four goals, including one of their three man-up goals on the day by JJ Ford for a 9-6 score with 2:49 to go until the break. Kelleher and Bredahl netted the final two goals of the period though for the 11-6 Jumbo advantage.

After the teams traded three goals apiece to start the second half making it 14-9 Jumbos, the Camels tallied the next three including two by Aidan McAvoy assisted by Patrick Atkins, and it was 14-12. Alf stopped the run before the delay.

After playing the final 2:18 of the third quarter scoreless when the teams came back, Kelleher and Alf scored for Tufts to start the fourth and the hosts had a 17-12 lead. JJ Ford scored next for the Camels, but Bredahl, Kelleher and Boyden had consecutive goals for the Jumbos making it 20-13 with 5:36 to go. That was more than enough of a margin for the Jumbos to close out their second conference win of the week.

Bredahl finished with three goals and four assists to lead Tufts with seven points, while Alf had two and two, Swank scored four and Boyden added four more with an assist. Merril finished 23 for 33 on face-offs and Conner Garzone stopped 12 shots in goal with four ground balls.

Ford's four goals led the Camels, while Nick Farnham finished with three goals and an assist and Rainville scored two goals and two assists. Brendan Trovato collected five ground balls and Jack Venturelli caused three turnovers for the visitors. Will Race made 13 saves in goal.

Shots finished 64-48 in favor of Tufts and the Jumbos also won ground balls 39-28.
