NEW LONDON, Conn. - The #6 Tufts University women's lacrosse team did not allow more than two goals in any quarter while junior Caroline Walter (pictured) scored five goals on the way to a 21-7 Jumbo victory at Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon. The win brings the Jumbos to 7-2 overall on the season and 3-2 in NESCAC play.
Tufts had 12 different goal scorers and five different players with multi-goal games. Along with Walter's team-leading five goals, Caroline Conaghan finished with three, and Kathryn Delaney, Lucy Hodge and Kate Mastrobuono all scored two goals. Conaghan added two assists as well.
Kellly Wolin, Emily Yorn, Greta Panke, Aine Downey and Julianna Ingrassia were the goal scorers for Connecticut College (5-6, 0-6 NESCAC).
Delaney got the scoring started just over four minutes in with a free-position goal, but the Camels answered back just 36 seconds later with a Yorn goal to tie it up at one. Anna Clarke finished a free-position shot past Camels goalie Violette Nidds with six minutes left in the first quarter to give the Jumbos the lead that they would not give up for the remainder of the game. Tufts finished the first quarter with three more goals from Claire Wright, Mae Briody and Conaghan while allowing just one Connecticut College goal from Kelly Wolin, bringing the Jumbos to the second quarter with a 5-2 lead.
The goal scoring continued for Tufts in the second as they scored the first three goals of the quarter, but Julianna Ingrassia ended the Jumbos' run with a goal for the hosts in the fifth minute. Both teams then traded goals and the Jumbos ended the quarter on another three-goal run, with Walter scoring two of the three to give Tufts a 12-4 lead at halftime. Molly Laliberty made six saves in the half for the Jumbos.
After Walter started the third quarter with a goal, Connecticut College scored the next two to cut the Tufts lead to seven. With 6:37 left in the third quarter, the Jumbos ended yet another quarter on a three-goal run with goals from Walter, Conaghan and Mastrobuono to make it 16-6.
Tufts allowed just one goal in the fourth quarter, scoring five of their own on goals from Walter, Ella Lesperance, Maddy Charest, Mastrobuono and Hodge. The Jumbos scored the first three of the quarter until Ingrassia scored for the Camels with 9:23 remaining before Tufts ended the game with two consecutive goals to clinch the 21-7 victory. Goalie Courtney Kaufman entered the game for Tufts to start the second half, making two saves.
Tufts won the ground ball battle 11-5 and had 17 draw controls compared to the Camels' 14. Madison Lehan scooped up three ground balls for Tufts with a caused turnover and Walter added two caused turnovers to her five-goal performance. Nidds finished with 13 saves for the Camels.
Next, the Jumbos will travel to Amherst College tomorrow for another NESCAC matchup at 1 pm.
