SOMERVILLE - The 10th-ranked Tufts University women's tennis team finished its regular-season in strong fashion with an 8-1 victory against ninth-ranked Amherst College on Sunday at South Courts.
The Jumbos (15-2) have won seven matches in a row. Amherst dropped to 10-7 overall.
Tufts swept doubles this afternoon with two convincing victories and another in a tie-breaker. The #1 pair of Tilly Rigby and Elle Christensen - #3 in the Northeast Region - reunited for the first time in three matches and had an 8-4 victory. Maggie Dorr and Caroline Garrido (pictured) were dominant with an 8-1 victory in the #2 doubles match. The sweep was earned with an 8-7 (4) tie-break win by Nicki Frankel and Rebecca Lim, who have developed into a strong pair this spring.
Frankel had more success in third singles with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Deliala Friedman for a 4-0 Tufts lead. Madeline Suk would take clinching honors, winning 7-5, 6-1 at #5 for the fifth win of the match.
Dorr won a second-set tie-breaker in sixth singles for six wins in a row in the match by the team. They would extend their lead to 8-0 with victories by Zoe Kava, a three-setter in the second singles match, and by Christensen at #1 singles (7-5, 7-6 (3)). Amherst averted the shutout with a three-set win by Calista Sha in fourth singles.
The Jumbos and Mammoths will now wait for the NESCAC seedings to be announced for next weekend's conference championship tournament. The top eight teams in the conference standings qualify for the championship and will play single elimination matches with no consolation matches.
