MEDFORD - Nineteen different players scored goals as the Tufts University men's lacrosse team opened 2022 NCAA Tournament action with a 33-10 win over Norwich University on Saturday afternoon at Bello Field. The goal total is a school record, breaking the previous mark of 32 from earlier this year at Bates.
Jack Boyden, Max Ettinghausen and Ethan Gatto all scored three goals to lead Tufts in the NCAA second round. Netting two for Tufts was Mac Bredahl, Kevin Christmas, Drew Guida, Camden Kelleher, Garrett Kurtz, Jack Pimental, Tommy Swank and Callum Wood. Jumbos Duke Alf, Cam Delcristo, Taggart Eymer, Sam Frisoli, Trevar Hall, Parker Merril, Liam Nestor and Cole Salton each had one.
The Jumbos (17-2) will now play St. John Fisher College in the Sweet 16 at Bello Field on Sunday at 4 pm. The Cardinals defeated Catholic University 18-11 in the other second-round game played a Bello Field today.
Tufts started relatively slow against the Cadets, scoring just one time in the first half of the first quarter by Boyden. However, they scored eight goals in the final seven minutes of the period to lead 9-0 after one.
The Jumbo advantage grew to 11-0 before Norwich scored their first, by Callum Jones at 12:17 of the second quarter. Jones would go on to score five times for the Cadets with an assist. Tufts then scored six goals in 68 seconds from 12:08 to 10:59 by six different players. Andrew Garrison ended the first half with a man-up goal for Norwich and the score was 19-4 at halftime.
Pimental scored back-to-back goals for the Jumbos early in the third quarter helping the hosts take a 22-4 advantage. The Cadets had a stretch where they scored three out of four - two by Jones - making it 23-7. Ettinghausen tallied all three of his goals in the final 19 minutes of action and Gatto scored the record-breaker with 9:18 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Tufts put 92 shots towards goal for the game. Norwich's Andrew Vernon was credited with 20 saves in 49 minutes of action. Conner Garzone started in net for the Jumbos, but Cody Wiebe played the second through fourth quarters and made three saves.
Parker Campbell recorded a goal and two asssists for Norwich. Adam Sanchez caused two turnovers and Mason McMahon picked up four ground balls.
Matthew Lane caused three Norwich turnovers for Tufts and George Panagopoulos led defensive ground balls with three. Parker Merril won 18 of 23 face-offs for Tufts.
