MEDFORD - Senior Mac Bredahl figured in 12 goals as the Tufts University men's lacrosse team pulled away from St. John Fisher College in the second half for a 22-8 victory in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Divsiion III Championship at Bello Field on Sunday afternoon.
The win sends the Jumbos (18-2) to the "Elite 8" where they will play Salisbury University next Saturday at RIT. Bowdoin plays the host TIgers in Saturday's other national quarterfinal, with the winners meeting in the "Final Four" on Sunday.
With his second 12-point game of the season, Bredahl became Tufts' single-season record holder for points with 136 (67 goals, 69 assists) today. He surpassed the 131 points John Uppgren scored in 2016. Bredahl also became the Jumbos' single-season assists leader, moving past Cole Bailey's 65 in 2014.
Today's game was 3-2 Tufts after St. John Fisher's Ian Evans scored with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter. Tufts would tally three times in the next 80 seconds though, and had four over the remainder of the period to lead 7-2 after one. Tommy Swank scored once and assisted a man-up goal by Max Ettinghausen during the late first-period stretch.
Goals by Cardinals Tucker O'Donnell and Zach Mitrano - his first of the season - pulled the visitors within 8-4 at 10:49 of the second quarter. The Jumbos would get three of the next four though and led 11-5 at intermission.
Bredahl would have nine of his 12 points in the second half as Tufts outsored the Cardinals 11-3 during the final 30 minutes of play. He assisted the first three goals of the second half, interrupted only by Mitrano's second goal of the game (and season), and it was 14-6 Jumbos. Camden Kelleher had two of the Tufts goals in the first eight minutes of the third. Tufts closed the period with three more to lead 17-7 heading into the fourth.
With two goals and two assists from Bredahl, Tufts ran off the first four goals of the fourth and led 21-7. Nicolas Miller had Fisher's lone fourth-quarter goal before Cole Salton finished the scoring for Tufts.
Mason Kohn was excellent on face-offs for Tufts, winning 14 of 24 mostly against Cardinal All-American Joe Post (15-27). Kelleher scored six times for Tufts, Swank had two goals and two assists and Jack Boyden netted three goals with an assist. Kyle Adelmann led Tufts defensively with three caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Conner Garzone was excellent in goal with 12 saves on 20 shots in 55 minutes. The eight goals Tufts allowed the Cardinals were four fewer than any other game this season.
Miller's three goals led St. John Fisher. Dugan Doeblin and Matthew Delaney had two caused turnovers each for the Cardinals, while Ben Hammond stopped 15 shots in net.
The Jumbos more than doubled St. John Fisher in shots 65-30 and won ground balls 39-27. Tufts was 4 for 5 man-up.
