MEDFORD – The Tufts University men's lacrosse team shook off Salisbury University for a 17-10 victory in the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament at RIT on Saturday afternoon.
The Jumbos (19-2) will now face the host Tigers on Sunday at 3 pm in the "Final Four." The winner earns a spot in the NCAA Championship Game.
Tufts' four leading scorers had 16 of the 17 goals today as Tommy Swank scored five, Mac Bredahl and Jack Boyden finished with four and Camden Kelleher added three. Bredahl passed for four assists to total an eight-point game, while Boyden's three assists gave him seven points.
Today's game was back-and forth for the first 20 minutes. Salisbury had a 4-3 lead after one period with Jarrett Bromwell scoring twice. However, the Jumbos tied the score at 5-5 on a Bredahl goal at 12:42 of the second quarter. That started a six-goal run by the Jumbos that put them up 10-5 with slightly six minutes remaining on the second-period clock. Bredahl had two goals and two assists during the run. Cross Ferrarra scored the final goal of the period for Salisbury and it was 10-6 Tufts at halftime.
Salisbury then scored three of the first four goals in the second half to close within 11-9 on another Ferrara tally at 7:51 of the third. The Jumbos would have another big response though, scoring five straight for a 16-9 advantage halfway through the fourth quarter. Two goals with an assist by Boyden and two goals by Swank led the Jumbo spurt.
Tufts would hold the Sea Gulls to just one goal in the fourth quarter – with sophomore goalie Conner Garzone saving three of four shots on goal. Kevin Christmas put the star on top of the tree scoring with 2:53 remaining in the fourth for the 17-10 victory.
The Jumbos won 17 out of 30 on face-offs with Parker Merril (8-14) and Mason Kohn (9-16) splitting the load. Kyle Adelmann and Louis Timmins both caused a pair of turnovers. Garzone finished with 10 saves.
Ferrara had four goals and an assist for Salisbury, whose 10 goals today matched their second-lowest total of the season. Zack Timmons recorded four ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Sea Gulls, who got 16 saves from goalie Z.J. Shahin.
Tufts led in shots (56-37) and ground balls (37-32). The game had just one penalty whistled against Salisbury.
This will be the fifth meeting between Tufts and RIT in the Final Four. The Jumbos have won three of the previous four, though the Tigers took last year's meeting 18-16 and went on to win the national championship.
