ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Luke Pilcher and Clifford Gaston scored seven goals each as the host RIT Tigers eliminated Tufts with a 26-15 victory in the NCAA DIII Men's Lacrosse Championship "Final Four" on Sunday.
The Tigers (21-1) will play for their second consecutive national championship next Sunday against Union College, who won 11-8 over York in today's other national semifinal. Tufts' season ends with a 19-3 record.
RIT scored on 10 of the first 11 shots that they put on goal this afternoon. Gaston had four, Pilcher and Marley Angus netted two each, and both sophomore Quinn Commandant and senior Spencer Bell scored one.
Tufts was able to get back into the game though with five in a row. Three by Jack Boyden led the Jumbo charge, and on another goal by Duke Alf at 13:20 in the second quarter Tufts was within 10-6.
However, the RIT offense was at full tilt this afternoon, and the hosts would control the remainder of the second period. After the teams traded goals, two by Pilcher and two by Commandant led a five-goal Tiger spurt that put the hosts up 16-7 at halftime. The RIT run started with a Pilcher goal, followed by a face-off win and another score by Commandant just eight seconds later.
As the high scoring pace continued in the third, the Tigers were able to add to their lead. The Jumbos got the difference down to eight (17-9) early in the frame with a man-up goal by Boyden. However, Gaston tallied three times in the period helping RIT take a 21-11 advantage, and they would also be on the man-up as the fourth quarter started.
The Tigers were able to take advantage with a Pilcher up goal making it 22-11. Dylan Bruno, Michael Finneran, Pilcher and Commandant scored from there and any hope of a miracle Tufts comeback was ended.
The Jumbos scored the final four goals of the game, two by Boyden, to close the margin to 11.
Commandant added five goals for the Tigers, who outshot the Jumbos 55-33. Bell finished with three goals and two assists, while Angus added two scores and three helpers. Senior LSM Taylor Jensen caused eight turnovers and picked up five ground balls for the hosts and graduate Jimmy Spillane was 18 of 33 on face-offs. Drew Hutchison finished with 12 saves.
Boyden's six goals today gave him 86 for the season, a new school record. Chris Schoenhut had 80 in 2014. Bredahl, already the single-season points record-holder, added two goals with four assists today to finish 2022 with 150 points (73 goals, 77 assists). He had moved past John Uppgren's 131 points from 2016. Kyle Adelman caused three turnovers today for Tufts and Mason Kohn won 18 of 27 face-offs.
