AMHERST - The Tufts University women's tennis team had a 5-2 win over Bowdoin College today in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC Championship in a match played at Amherst College. The contest between the #3 seed Jumbos and #6 seed Polar Bears was played to decision.
The Jumbos (16-2) took the first two doubles matches with victories by the #3 pair of Nicki Frankel and Rebecca Lim 8-3, and by top duo Tilly Rigby and Elle Christensen 8-4. Bowdoin (7-10) closed the margin with a #2 doubles victory 8-5 by Elizabeth Yu and Hannah Buckhout.
Tufts would get to a 4-1 lead with opening singles wins by Christensen in the top spot 6-0, 6-3 and Maggie Dorr in sixth singles (6-2, 6-4). Bowdoin stayed alive with a 6-2, 6-2 victory by Fleming Landau in the fifth singles match. In third singles, Frankel and Bowdoin's Evelyn Safar went to a thid set with the Tufts senior securing the team victory with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win.
The Jumbos were ahead in both unfinished matches, Zoe Kava at #2 (7-5, 6-5) and Casey Cummings in fourth singles (6-3, 4-6, 2-0).
Into the conference semifinals for the seventh time, Tufts will play Middlebury College at Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 pm.
