Men's Lacrosse Will Play for 11th NESCAC Title After 17-9 Win Over Wes

Box Score

MEDFORD - The Tufts University men's lacrosse team will play for its 11th NESCAC title on Sunday after handling Wesleyan University 17-9 in the semifinals on Saturday at Bello Field.

The top-seeded Jumbos (15-2) will play second-seed Bowdoin College (16-1) for the NESCAC title on Sunday at noon at Bello FIeld. The Polar Bears stunned Amherst in today's other semifinal in Medford, coming from behind late for a 15-14 victory.

Tufts had no trouble with a Wesleyan team that turned the ball over 28 times. Jumbo Jack Boyden scored the game's first four goals before the Cardinals answered with the final two of the first quarter for a 4-2 Tufts advantage. One of the Cardinal goals came man-up by Justin Hazard from Jake Sexton.

Boyden then started the second quarter by scoring his fifth consecutive goal, the third assisted by Mac Bredahl. DJ Dixon answered for Wesleyan making it a 5-3 game, but a long-stick goal by Taggart Eymer started a three-goal run for Tufts that closed the first half giving the hosts an 8-3 lead.

The Cardinals had 17 of their turnovers in the first half when they were six for 12 on clears. This negated good face-off work by Wesleyan's Tyler Campbell, who was nine for 11 in the first half.

Wesleyan opened the second half with a goal by Matt Gill, but Tufts had the next three including two by Bredahl to lead 11-4 with 3:49 on the third-quarter clock. Justin Hazard assisted a goal and scored one while Bredahl did the same for Tufts in the final three minutes giving the Jumbos a 13-6 advantage heading into the fourth.

The Jumbos opened up a 16-6 margin by scoring the first three goals of the final quarter, two by Boyden who had seven on the day and now has 64 for the season (eighth all-time at Tufts). Gill and a man-up goal by Jumbo Tommy Swank made it 17-7 before the Cardinals netted the last two by Alex Moynihan and Dixon.

Bredahl finished with three goals and six assists to go over 100 points for the year (55-53-108), as did Boyden (104). Swank and Duke Alf both had two goals and an assist. Defensively, Matt Lane caused three turnovers and picked up five ground balls, while Conner Garzone made 10 saves in goal. Kyle Adelmann and Michael Ayers also caused three turnovers for Tufts.

Hazard with two goals and two assists, and Dixon with three goals led Wesleyan. Campbell finished 14 for 26 on face-offs and Colin Hanley made 12 saves.

Shots were 55-40 Tufts and ground balls went to the Jumbos as well 36-31.
