MEDFORD – For the 11th time in 12 seasons since 2010, the Tufts University men's lacrosse team is the NESCAC champion after the Jumbos dispatched Bowdoin College 20-11 in the conference final this afternoon at Bello Field.
Senior Mac Bredahl had six goals with two assists and junior Jack Boyden added six more goals as the Jumbos built a 17-4 lead with six minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Polar Bears scored seven times in the last 20 minutes to get within nine goals at the end.
This is the fourth NESCAC title in a row for the Jumbos, who improved to 16-2 and earn the conference's automatic NCAA Tournament berth. Bowdoin, also 16-2, is sure to get an at-large NCAA entry.
Today's game had a slow start early on, with sloppy play and just four goals in the first 15 minutes. The Jumbos led 3-1 with tallies by Tommy Swank, Bredahl and Boyden, while the Polar Bears got one from Zach Chandler.
The teams traded goals through the first 10 minutes of the second quarter and the Jumno lead was at 6-4 when Donal Mullane scored for Bowdoin off a face-off win by Ethan Barnard.
However, Tufts would net the next 11 goals to get to that 13-goal margin of 17-4. The hosts finished the first half with three in a row – two by Bredahl – to lead 9-4 at intermission. They then scored eight in a row in the third, with four by Boyden and three with an assist from Bredahl.
Bowdoin started its good closing stretch with a man-up goal late in the third by Will Byrne, who had three goals with an assist during the run. Mullane scored once and assisted three during that time.
Mason Kohn was again strong in the face-off circle for Tufts winning 17 of 30, while Conner Garzone made 11 saves in goal for Tufts. Kyle Adelmann caused two turnovers and collected four ground balls. Camden Kelleher and Tommy Swank both scored three for the Jumbos.
Mullane finished with three goals and five assists for Bowdoin, while Byrne tallied four and two. Goalie Robert Hobbs saw 41 shots on goal and stopped 22 of them. Noah Robb caused two turnovers for the visitors.
Bowdoin struggled with its clearing game early and finished 12 for 20. They had 23 turnovers in all. Tufts released 79 shots (38 for Bowdoin) and scored three times on six man-up chances. Ground balls were 35-27 for the Jumbos.
